In honour of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the Eco Council succeeded in promoting a House Competition and other activities based on the topic adopted by the United Nations of “Climate Action”. All middle and high school students were encouraged to submit an entry to either the “Poems for the Earth” or “Arts of the Earth” competition.
Needless to say, the endeavour was a success and we saw students produce a large array of insightful and inspiring work leaving the judges stunned at the difficulty they faced in deciding a winner.
Each student presented something meaningful in their own unique way and congratulations to all those who participated. You are all champions when it comes to being dedicated to the protection of the environment!
However, after a careful deliberation Eduardo (G11) was announced the winner of the Poetry competition and Chiara (G12) was announced the winner of the Art competition.
Moreover, behind the scenes a debate was held on the topic of sustainable diets, focusing specifically on the motion of “A vegetarian diet is the only sustainable diet that can combat climate change”.
The debate was chaired by Alessandro L., the Vice Coordinator of the Eco Council, and it featured Mr. Baldoni (the Science Department Coordinator and Biology teacher) who argued in favour of the motion and Mr. Allard (the Middle and High School principal) who spoke against it.
After raising numerous interesting strong points, such as whether or not fish ponds are damaging to the environment, or the role of education and its importance in building a more sustainable future for the youth generations in the coming years, some of the main outcomes of the debate were that:
New laws have to be written to help a country become more eco friendly
Our meat should come from healthy and sustainable farming productions
Underwater farming might be an interesting and innovative way to produce
KM 0 is a key factor in our healthy lives
We should have a more seasonal diet rather than eating random products
As Giuseppe S., the student Coordinator of the Eco Council, said in his opening speech during the Earth Day liv assembly, ‘we students are the next generation that will shape the world of tomorrow for a better future, our future!’ This is why the students of Rome International School are staying loyal to the concepts of environmental solidarity and social justice even during these challenging times.
As Giuseppe said, “we will come out of this crisis only with solidarity and critical thinking!”
Keep updated and safe!
